617: BLINDING AUTO-EXPOSURE

Digital cameras and camcorders have a lot of automation built in, but sometimes that can work against you. One of the culprits is ultraviolet light; you can't see it but your camera can. Tech industry insider Marty Winston tells why your camera may need its own kind of sun blocker.

If you have a scene with a lot of UV in it, like a swimmer in a pool on a sunny day, the UV brightness can flood the auto-exposure sensor and give you a very dark shot. Simple filters, like UV Protectors and circular polarizers, are the cure.

You can find these filters at most camera stores; make sure you know your camera's lens thread size before you go, or bring it along.
